Carbon neutral means that the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere by a process, institution, individual, or country, is equivalent to the amount of CO2 removed or offset. Therefore, no additional CO2 is emitted by such processes, hence being “neutral”. Many companies have pledged to become carbon neutral within 10-20 years using multi-faceted approaches including investing in renewableRenewable is a term used widely in the energy sector. It essentially refers to something that can be energy solutions (e.g. Google, Tesla, IKEA, EasyJet, Volvo), reforestation projects (e.g. Microsoft, Starbucks) and carbon capture technologies (e.g. Chevron, United Airlines, Danone). There is, however, valid scepticism around the real efficacy of these incentives to achieve carbon neutrality and the extent to which these statements are just greenwashing.
