Recombinant refers to something that has been produced using genetic recombination – a process in which genetic material from different sources are combined to create a new, artificial sequence. The process of recombination involves isolating and cloning the gene that encodes the desired protein or RNA into an expression vector. The expression vector is then introduced into a host organism or cell linePopulations of cells derived from a specific cell or tissue in an organism, for example the human ki. The host cells are allowed to proliferate and express the protein before this is purified, stabilised and packaged for distribution. Using recombinant technology allows for customisation of proteins to meet specific needs e.g., expression of human proteins in non-mammalian systems or hosts.
