Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering is a broad term that refers to the manipulation of an organism’s genetic (DNA) code. There are many genetic engineering techniques that allow scientists to add, delete, or replace specific DNA sequences. Genetic engineering can be used to edit the genome of fruit to make it last longer, or to manipulate microorganisms to produce proteins such as insulin. Recently there have been huge breakthroughs in immunotherapybased cancer treatment. This type of therapy relies on the genetic engineering of the patient’s own immune cells to reprogram them to better target the cancer cells. Immunotherapy has been rapidly advancing, and the market is estimated to be worth over $200 billion by 2030.
