Cell culture

Cell culture refers to the growth of any type of cell (ie, plant, microbial, or animal) under controlled conditions, outside of their natural environment. Cells are combined with nutrients, proteins, and compounds that they need to survive and grow which is known as the growth media. The specific culture conditions vary widely depending on the cell or tissue type. Many companies are attempting to recreate animal-based food products in the lab by culturing a small sample of animal cells, without the need for growing and killing an animal. A wide range of cultivated food products (covering almost all types of meat and fish) are in development including beef, chicken, pork, oysters, caviar, fish, prawns, veal, duck, crab, turkey, lamb, foie gras, scallops, and lobster.
