At Revena we’ve developed an in-house philosophy around technical due diligence of scientific and technical companies. It was shaped by our direct experience as founders and refined through work on over 300 companies across multiple funding rounds. Collectively, these evaluations have supported over $1 billion in realised investment. The core themes of this approach are outlined below:

Actionable, Focused and Proportional
We believe technical due diligence should be matched to the stage and scope of the company being evaluated. Startups are often still experimenting and pivoting.
We believe that what matters most is whether the core ideas are robust, the team has the skills to execute and that technical risks can be addressed and minimised. Not whether every process will have been industrialised with an established Go-to-Market route in young companies.
Our reports are designed to be useful to both investors and founders. We focus on identifying the most material risks and opportunities, not attempting to catalogue every detail or omission. We also highlight potential alternative applications or technical advantages that may not yet be fully realised.
Humans-in-the-Loop
A single perspective is rarely enough to form a complete picture of a complex technical system.
Technologies are often multi-layered, with dependencies and nuances that span disciplines. One person alone may not have a background which covers the scope of a technology, which can lead to points for diligence being missed.
Our approach is to bring together two or more experts whose areas of knowledge overlap. We have and will continue to use a human perspective as this enables cross-checking, constructive debate, and a richer understanding of both risks and opportunities. It also reflects the reality that good technology assessments depend as much on context and judgment as they do on raw expertise. Crucially, deep sector knowledge also contains the knowledge of what does not work, how experiments may have failed historically and the necessary negative data points that are often omitted from reported research.
We use experts who are actively working in technical fields – with an emphasis on those that understanding how technologies are evolving, what’s becoming standard, and what kinds of challenges are emerging in real deployments
Leave it Better than we Found It
Due diligence should not function as a gatekeeper – it is there to help everyone involved make better decisions around technology, risk and investment.
At Revena we are open with our insights, supporting founders wherever we can, and offering practical input throughout the process. We don’t hold back feedback until the final report. Where appropriate, we engage directly with teams, ask honest questions, and suggest improvements or mitigations early. In many cases, this process helps founders refine their thinking or adjust their technical roadmap in ways that are useful far beyond the immediate investment context.
This approach: collaborative: rigorous and founder-aware, has evolved from our own experiences on both sides of the table. We think it leads to better outcomes for investors, clearer signals for founders, and ultimately, stronger companies.
